How is the performance difference between quartz crystal oscillator and quartz crystal resonator?

:2022-08-12 :ICKU

Quartz crystal oscillator [trade_no] and quartz crystal resonator[trade_no]  are both electronic devices that provide stable circuit frequency. Quartz crystal resonator is a kind of passive crystal, and quartz crystal oscillator is an active crystal oscillator. The difference between passive crystal and active crystal oscillator is that the former has no voltage range, while the latter has voltage; Another difference is that the price of the latter is often several times higher than that of the former.

Quartz crystal oscillator uses the piezoelectric effect of quartz crystal to vibrate, and quartz crystal resonator uses quartz crystal and built-in IC to work together.

Then, how is the performance difference between quartz crystal oscillator and quartz crystal resonator?

First, the crystal oscillator parameters have voltage units, and the crystal resonator parameters will not have voltage units.

Secondly, the crystal oscillator has more than 4 pins, including 4 pins. The crystal resonator is usually 2 or 4 pins, and there will be no crystal resonator with more than 4 pins.

Thirdly, the crystal oscillator will not have ceramic material, because compared with quartz material, ceramic material does not have enough stability, and is far less accurate than quartz material. Crystal resonators are made of quartz and ceramics, and the ceramic resonator we commonly call is one of them. Among ceramic resonators, Murata crystal is the brand with excellent stability and reputation.

Finally, the working properties of the crystal oscillator and the crystal resonator[trade_no]  are inconsistent. The crystal oscillator can vibrate by itself without the help of external components, because there is a chip inside the crystal oscillator. Crystal resonators need external components to start vibration.
